From Survival to Agency: Lived Experience, Development, and What Helps Youth Change
About
Thomas R. Rivera III (“Tommy”) is a psychology student at Laramie County
Community College and a public speaker whose work focuses on youth
development, suicide prevention, and rehabilitation through lived experience.
Drawing from his background growing up in a home affected by family substance
use and emotional instability, he offers insight into how early adversity, low self-
esteem, and suicidal ideation can influence the inner lives and behavior of at-risk
youth.
Thomas has spoken at universities, professional symposiums, and community
forums across Wyoming and beyond. His perspective is valued for translating
lived experience into practical insight for counselors, clinicians, and other youth-
serving professionals. His work emphasizes belonging, purpose, restorative
justice, and community connection as key factors in supporting positive change
and long-term resilience among youth.
